Mount Schank is a striking and rare landscape feature, the volcanic cinder cone rising dramatically above the flat coastal plain. It and Mount Gambier are the only two such examples of recent volcanism in South Australia having originally erupting 4,500 years ago.
Mount Schank was named in December 1800 during an exploratory voyage along Australia’s south-east coast by the ship HMS Lady Nelson. Mount Gambier was also spotted and named on the same voyage.
The trail to the rim of the crater comprises mostly of a limestone planks, 1,038 of them, the hike begins from the carpark and picnic area
