A sculpture of the Virgin Mary is located in front of the Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church at 413 S 1st St, Harbor Beach, MI 48441. Mary has outstretched arms and wears a painted blue robe. It sits atop a concrete base surrounded by bushes. It faces east toward Lake Huron with the church at its back. There is a dedication on the base that reads:
IN MEMORY OF
FATHER JAMES J. MARVIN
PASTOR
OUR LADY OF LAKE HURON
1938 - 1963
The Smithsonian description: "Mary is in robes, with a veil on her head, and her arms outstretched and palms raised upward. The figure stands on a short, square base of brick topped by a concrete slab."
Mary was a first-century Jewish woman of Nazareth, the wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus. She is a central figure of Christianity, venerated under various titles such as virgin or queen, many of them mentioned in the Litany of Loreto. The Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, Church of the East, Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches believe that Mary, as mother of Jesus, is the Mother of God.
