What follows is the route that I took to reach the summit of South Tarryall Peak and the station and reference marks, which shares some similarities with the 1953 CGS description. From the Spruce Grove Trailhead at N39 08.165 W105 27.805, walk through the Forest Service campground and cross the bridge over Tarryall Creek. Veer left after crossing the bridge and follow a well-maintained trail for approximately 2.1 miles to the top of a small ridge and a trail junction at N39 09.755 W105 27.432. Take the right (east-bound) trail and hike for an additional 0.1 miles to the boundary of the Lost Creek Wilderness. From the wilderness boundary, continue eastward on the trail along the forested northern side of South Tarryall Peak to reach Hankins Pass at N39 09.855 W105 26.134. At the trail junction on top of the pass, turn to the south-southwest and begin bushwhacking over steep terrain with abundant downfall and thick forest. Try to keep the summit in view where possible and hike towards the high point. Per the CGS description, reference mark 2 is set in the northwest side of a 15-foot diameter granite boulder.
