The Borgund Stave Church is one of the best preserved Medieval churches in Norway. It was originally built around 1200 for the parish of Borgund, near Laerdal. In 1868, a new Stave Church was built to replace it. This new church is located to the south of the old. The old stave church was beatifully restored and is now one of the mayor tourist attractions of the region. It is now a museum about the church and parish history.
The parish has not grown significantly since the Medieval era, because the village only has about 10 to 20 houses. The old stave church is preserved as a 'Ulike Vernestatus'.
