Veterans Freedom Square, constructed with private funds and maintained by the City of Independence, was dedicated on May 28, 2016. The Square contains memorials to all major wars and a number of additional monuments and memorials.

The text on the monument is:

The American Civil War resulted from the eventual succession of 11 southern states following long-standing differences about slavery and states rights. From the Confederate shelling of Fort Sumpter to their surrender to Union Forces at Appomattox, more than three million Americans fought in it, and over 500,000 men - 2 percent of the population - died in it.

It was unquestionably the most important event in the life of the nation. It was the end of slavery and proved to be the watershed of a new political and economic order: the beginning of big industry, big business, and big government. It was the first modern war and, for Americans, the costliest, yielding the most American fatalities and the greatest domestic suffering the nation has ever known.

For four horrible years, from Manassas to Gettysburg, from Shiloh to Vicksburg and thousands of places in between, Americans made war on each other and killed each other in great numbers - and changed the face of the country, forever. As president Lincoln so eloquently stated: "The war was about a 'New Birth of Freedom.'"
