David Janssen was born in rural Nebraska in 1931 to Edward Meyer and Berniece Graf, a former ‘Miss Nebraska.’ After his parents’ divorce, a five-year-old David moved with his mother to Hollywood where he grew up and went to school. His mother eventually re-married to one Eugene Janssen whose name David Janssen used during his acting career.

Janssen began his acting career playing bit parts in movies in the late 1940s. These led to more prominent roles and eventually to a starring role in television’s ‘Richard Diamond, Private Detective’ which ran from 1957 to 1960. The role for which David Janssen is mostly known is that of the falsely convicted Dr. Richard Kimble in ‘The Fugitive.’ The show ran for four seasons and the final episode achieved a 72 percent share rating - the highest ever at that time. I saw that episode, but as a rerun on MeTV.

David Janssen starred in two more television series (‘O'Hara, U.S. Treasury’ and ‘Harry O’) and several made-for-TV movies. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1980 at the age of 48. He is laid to rest at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, CA.
