"Het Afrika Museum is een museum in het dorp Berg en Dal, in de Nederlandse gemeente Berg en Dal (provincie Gelderland). Het museum is geheel gewijd aan Afrikaanse kunst en cultuur; het is ontstaan in 1954 uit de verzamelingen van de paters en broeders van de Congregatie van de Heilige Geest (spiritijnen). Deze orde verzamelde Afrikaanse voorwerpen uit haar missiegebied in Tanzania. De voorwerpen kwamen in Nederland terecht via missionarissen, missiebisschoppen, Afrikaanse leken en Afrikaanse ambassades. Ook werden voorwerpen aangekocht. Het museum opende in 1958 zijn deuren in Berg en Dal.
Binnen en buiten
Het museum omvat een binnenmuseum waarin een grote collectie Afrikaanse kunst is opgenomen die aandacht besteedt aan Afrikaanse architectuur, Afrikaanse visies op kunst en schoonheid, Afrikaanse kunst en religie en samenleving. Daarnaast is er ook een in Nederland uniek buitenmuseum met een combinatie van openluchtmuseum-bouwwerken zoals een origineel Kusasi-woonerf uit Ghana, een kampement van Baka-pygmeeën uit Kameroen, een palaverhuis, een Sotho-woonerf uit Lesotho, Toffinou-paalwoningen uit Benin, Dogon-woonerf uit Mali en beelden uit Zimbabwe.
Wereldculturen
In 2005 is het museum ingrijpend verbouwd en uitgebreid. Sedert 2014 is het museum een van de locaties van het Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen, waarvan ook het Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, het Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde in Leiden en het Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam deel uitmaken. Het NMVW is sindsdien de huurder van het museum en heeft de collectie van zo'n 8000 stukken in bruikleen. Toenmalig directeur Stijn Schoonderwoerd gaf in april 2019 aan dat het museum kunstwerken uit de collectie die in de koloniale tijd geroofd zijn, wil teruggeven aan de landen van herkomst. Het museum gaat zelf uitzoeken welke kunstvoorwerpen voor teruggave in aanmerking komen. Er waren tot maart 2019 geen claims ontvangen voor museumstukken van het Afrika Museum. In september 2020 kwam het museum landelijk in het nieuws nadat Franssprekende activisten hadden geprobeerd een beeld te stelen uit het museum. De activisten meenden dat het Afrika Museum spullen herbergt die geplunderd en gestolen zouden zijn tijdens de kolonisatie van Afrika."

The museum is entirely devoted to African art and culture; it was created in 1954 from the collections of the fathers and brothers of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spirits). This order collected African objects from its mission area in Tanzania. The objects ended up in the Netherlands via missionaries, mission bishops, African laymen and African embassies. The museum itself will find out which works of art will be commented on for return. Until March 2019, no claims had been received for exhibits from the Africa Museum. In September 2020, the museum made national headlines after French-speaking activists were given a statue to steal from the museum. The activists believed that the Africa Museum was hiding items that could have been looted and stolen during the colonization of Africa."
