The milestone shows fairly local distances, the furthest being 22 miles. It is next to the boundary fence of York race course.

On the opposite site of the road is the entrance to Little Hob Moor which leads to Hob Moor. Along with the area of the racecourse they are ancient Commons which had protected grazing rights and are still protected as open spaces providing havens for wildlife.

The milestone is a Historic England, Grade II Listed Building.
