Drusus und die Räter
Der übermannsgroße römische Legionär aus Holz (5,30 m hoch) an der Nordwestseite der Villa Venezia stellt den römischen Feldherren Drusus, den Eroberer der Räter in Tirol, dar. Die Idee, diese geschichtliche Persönlichkeit zu schnitzen, verdankte Batista seinem Bruder, dem Heimatforscher Wilhelm Moroder-Lusenberg. Er erläuterte Batista die Person und die historischen Zusammenhänge. Vor der Verwirklichung der Holzfigur entwarf Batista ein Tonmodell, das als Vorlage der Skulptur diente. Neben dem ladinischen Namen „l gran mandl“ (der große Mann) führt die Skulptur oft auch die Bezeichnung „der römische Legionär“. Dies entsprach nicht gänzlich Wilhelms Vorstellungen, stellt doch die knapp über 5 m hohe Monumentalfigur, was die Kleidung betrifft, nicht einen einfachen Legionär, sondern einen Feldherrn dar. Die Statue ist eine auch eine über die Grenze Südtirols hinaus bekannte Skulptur. Damit sie auch weiterhin erhalten bleibt, wurde sie 2001 inBronze gegossen.

1916 Incarico da parte del Feldmaresciallo Conrad von Hötzendorf comandante il fronte Sud di quattro grandi sculture fra cui la S. Barbara patrona dei ferrovieri in occasione della costruzione del Treno della Val Gardena, gli apostoli Pietro e Paolo e l’aquila tirolese in cemento.

Il Museo della Val Gardena espone attualmente due sculture del J.B. Moroder raffiguranti Oswald von Wolkenstein a cavallo, che serviva per raccogliere fondi nella prima guerra mondiale e la S. Barbara un tempo collocata vicino al tunnel ferroviario di Ortisei

Drusus and the Rhaetians

This superhuman great Roman legionary of wood (5.30 m high) situated at the northwest side of the Villa Venezia Roman Drusus, the conqueror of Rhaetians in Tyrol, represents the idea to carve this historical personality, owed Batista his brother, the local historian William Moroder Lusenberg. He explained Batista the person and the historical context. Prior to the implementation of the wooden figure Batista created a clay model, which served as a template of the sculpture. In addition to the Ladin name "l gran mandl" (the big man) often leads the sculpture and the phrase "the Roman legionary."
