Cathedral Church of St. Luke is the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. The Gothic Revival style church was designed by architect Charles Coolidge Haight. The cornerstone for the cathedral church was laid on August 15, 1867 and the first services were held on Christmas Day in 1868. After the mortgage was retired in 1876, the cathedral was consecrated on October 18, 1877.

The stone block church with a gable roof is oriented parallel to State Street with the gable ends facing other buildings on private property. A steeple is located on the roof near the south end of the church. The entrance is set within a Gothic arch at the base of a bell tower in the center of the building. Above the entrance is the belfry with two tall Gothic style louvered windows on the north, west and south sides of the tower. Above is a cross. The north and south sides of the tower have a pair of Gothic windows on the lower level.

Halfway down the sides of the church is an extension with a slanted roof. On this extension south of the tower are three sets of two Gothic windows separated by stone columns. This is followed by a tall projecting extension with an auxiliary entrance and a circular window above the entrance. On the north side of the tower is a projecting gable end with a large stained glass window. Above the extension on the main block of the church are four sets of three Gothic windows to the south of the tower and one set to the north. The center windows are taller than the other two.
