[EN] We know how popular legends have nourished the history of France. The Gouffre de Padirac is no exception in the Quercy region...

There is nothing more disturbing than this hole in the surface of the earth, and nothing like it to let the imagination answer this troubling enigma to which mystical powers and frightening names were granted: Devil? Treasure? Trace of a divine gesture? All the hypotheses were born.

Among the most deeply rooted of them, the story of flames coming out of the abyss to defend a treasure hidden by the English at the end of the Hundred Years' War was believed by many people in the Lot.

Another legend invites Lucifer who, in order to challenge St Martin, would have formed the abyss with his heel, inviting the Saint to cross the abyss against the souls of the damned peasants that he was about to lead to hell... A disastrous barter that pushed St Martin, guided by his faith, to spur his mule to commit the feat of jumping over the abyss! This prodigious leap is said to have left the imprint of the animal's hoof in the rock, still visible today.

Defeated and vexed, the Devil would then have disappeared for good at the bottom of the Abyss...
