The NGS data sheet indicates that this cairn was first observed in 1894. It is possible that the cairn may have been rebuilt or added to over the time between myself recovering it in 2013 and when it was first documented, but a cairn remains at the summit of the peak nonetheless.

There are likely several ways to reach the summit of Cottonwood Peak. For myself, I parked at the mining camp to the N-NW of the Cloverdale Flotation Ore Mill in Cloverdale Basin to the northeast of the peak. The road to the mining camp should only be driven by high-clearance 4WD vehicles - it is a rough, rocky, and fairly long drive to reach the mining camp from the Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp to the east. From the mining camp, I hiked up the 4WD road to Silver Lake and then ascended the peak via its northeast slope and north ridge.
