[FR] Ce monument historique est à la fois une tour de guet, une porte fortifiée et aussi une prison. Dans l'enceinte du XIIe siècle, le beffroi était la porte qui reliait le quartier du château autour de la Tour Blanche et de l'abbaye Notre-Dame aux autres quartiers de la cité. Cette porte dans l'enceinte du château a été transformée à la fin du XVI siècle, quand elle a été désarmée. Son élévation est moins perceptible aujourd'hui, depuis que le fossé qui protégeait le château a été comblé.

Le bâtiment que vous pouvez voir aujourd'hui est un monument à deux tours coiffées, avec une terrasse au premier étage et des fenêtres avec une treille de bois pour surveiller. La décoration Renaissance du beffroi est surtout remarquable, du côté de la place du 10 Juin 1944. Dans le cintre de la porte, les blocs de pierre de taille sont sculptés avec un décor d'écume, le linteau de la fenêtre est soutenu par deux modillons travaillés comme des têtes. A gauche de cette même fenêtre, une inscription porte la date de 1583 et le nom d'Antoine Dorsanne, lieutenant du baillage d'Issoudun, qui a suivi les travaux.

Les salles intérieures du beffroi sont devenues prisons et ont été occupées jusqu'à la fin de la guerre de 1914-1918 par des prisonniers. La cloche du Beffroi, qui sonne chaque heure deux fois a été installée en 1511 el a pour nom Bonne Aventure.

In the 12th century, the belfry was the gateway that linked the castle district around the Tour Blanche and the Notre-Dame abbey to the other districts of the city. This gate in the castle enclosure was transformed at the end of the 16th century, when it was disarmed. Its elevation is less noticeable today, since the moat that protected the castle has been filled in.

The building that you can see today is a monument with two towers, with a terrace on the second floor and windows with a wooden trellis to watch over. The Renaissance decoration of the belfry is especially remarkable, on the side of the square of June 10, 1944. In the arch of the door, the ashlar blocks are carved with a foam decoration, the lintel of the window is supported by two modillions worked like heads. To the left of this same window, an inscription bears the date 1583 and the name of Antoine Dorsanne, lieutenant of the Issoudun bailiwick, who supervised the work.

The inner rooms of the belfry became prisons and were occupied by prisoners until the end of the 1914-1918 war. The bell of the Belfry, which rings twice every hour, was installed in 1511 and is called Bonne Aventure.
