Hanks ist ein weit entfernter Verwandter des 16. US-Präsidenten Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). Lincolns Urururgroßeltern (Altgroßeltern) William und Sarah Hanks sind die gemeinsamen Vorfahren.
Im März 2020 war Hanks einer der ersten älteren prominenten Corona-Erkrankten der westlichen Welt.
