Who can forget such delightful characters as Freddie the Freeloader or Clem Kaddiddlehopper? These and other Red Skelton creations made frequent appearances on ‘The Red Skelton Hour,’ an early TV show that aired for over twenty years (1951-1971) and always enjoyed high ratings. Though often described as a comedian, Skelton preferred to be called a clown. His father had once performed as a clown for the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus back in Indiana where he grew up, so I guess that would make Red a chip off the ol’ block.

As with many entertainers of this era, Red Skelton got his start on the vaudeville circuit and in minstrel and other traveling shows beginning when he was only in his teens. Although he appeared in dozens of films in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, Skelton’s real niche was in radio and the emerging medium of television where he hosted his own shows for many years. In all, Red Skelton’s career spanned over 70 years, right up until his death in 1997.

In addition to acting and performing comedy skits, Red Skelton was a prolific artist and composer. He painted over 1000 pictures, mostly of clowns and wrote about 8000 musical compositions. Some of his clown paintings have fetched in excess of $80,000 on the open market.
