[FR] L'ancienne église de Balazuc, remplacée depuis 1895 par un nouvel édifice construit en haut du village, mais désaffectée seulement depuis 2005, comporte deux parties. En effet, à l'église romane, a été ajoutée ultérieurement une deuxième nef qui en double sensiblement la superficie.
Située au bas du village, c'est une solide construction établie sur un éperon rocheux qui domine l'Ardèche. Depuis l'autre rive de la rivière, on aperçoit bien la silhouette caractéristique de son clocher-mur percé de trois arcades et surmonté d'un petit clocheton, qui domine les toitures avoisinantes.
Extérieurement, on remarque d'abord l'abside qui se présente sous la forme d'une haute tour semi-cylindrique, construite en pierres soigneusement taillées et parfaitement appareillées. Une légère différence d'appareillage de la partie supérieure laisse penser qu'elle a dû être surélevée ; la présence d'étroites meurtrières conforte l'idée généralement admise que ce fut dans un but défensif. Mais on remarque aussi l'existence d'une autre ouverture dont la forme caractéristique montre indubitablement qu'un pigeonnier a dû être installé là à une certaine époque. Robert Saint-Jean n'avait pas manqué de noter cet emploi inattendu d'un édifice religieux.
La façade occidentale qui surplombe l'Ardèche se présente comme un mur nu percé d'une simple fenêtre, prolongé par le clocher-arcade dont les trois baies sont dépourvues de cloches depuis que celles-ci ont été transportées dans la nouvelle église. Le petit clocheton supérieur abritait la cloche de l'horloge.
[EN] The old church of Balazuc, replaced since 1895 by a new building built at the top of the village, but disused only since 2005, has two parts. Indeed, to the Romanesque church, a second nave has been added later, which doubles the surface.
Located at the bottom of the village, it is a solid construction established on a rocky spur which dominates the Ardèche. From the other bank of the river, one can see the characteristic silhouette of its bell tower-wall pierced by three arches and topped by a small bell tower, which dominates the neighboring roofs.
Outside, the apse is a high semi-cylindrical tower, built of carefully cut and perfectly matched stones. A slight difference in the bonding of the upper part suggests that it must have been raised; the presence of narrow loopholes supports the generally accepted idea that it was built for defensive purposes. But we also notice the existence of another opening whose characteristic shape undoubtedly shows that a dovecote must have been installed there at some time. Robert Saint-Jean did not fail to note this unexpected use of a religious building.
The western facade, which overlooks the Ardèche River, is a bare wall with a single window, extended by the bell tower-arcade, whose three bays have been deprived of bells since they were moved to the new church. The small upper bell tower housed the clock bell.
