Die Rakotzbrücke befindet sich im 200 Hektar großen Rhododendronpark in Kromlau. Das Dorf ist ein Ortsteil der sächsischen Gemeinde Gablenz. Es liegt im Landschaftsschutzgebiet „Kromlau-Gablenzer Restseengebiet“. Als berühmtes Fotomotiv zieht die Rakotzbrücke Menschen aus aller Welt an.
Die Geschichte der Rakotzbrücke

Im Jahr 1842 erwirbt der Großgrundbesitzer Friedrich Hermann Rötschke das Gut Kromlau. In den Folgejahren entsteht der Kromlauer Park im Stil eines englischen Landschaftsparks. Aus Basaltsteinen von Steinbrüchen der Sächsischen Schweiz entstehen Grotten, Skulpturen wie beispielsweise die Orgel und Architekturen wie die Freitreppe. Von 1863 bis 1883 lässt Friedrich Hermann Rötschke die Rakotzbrücke erbauen. Sie umspannt den 35 Meter breiten Rakotzsee.
Aus Feldsteinen und Basalt besteht das Baumaterial. Das dunkle, magmatische Gestein ist vulkanischer Herkunft. Die Feldsteine in der Lausitz bestehen vorwiegend aus Grauwacke, Gneis, Granit und Granodiorit. Große, eckige Basaltsäulen säumen die Bogenbrücke. Basaltsäulen, Orgel genannt, ragen neben der Brücke aus dem Wasser des Rakotzsees. Auch für die Brücke transportieren die Erbauer Basaltsteine aus der Sächsischen Schweiz.
Während der 20 Jahre andauernden Bauphase stützen hölzerne Träger die Brücke. Bei deren Entfernung im Jahr 1882 kommt der Gablenzer Zimmermann Traugott Wolsch ums Leben. An ihn erinnert eine Gedenktafel. Nach einem Bericht des Chronisten Aisch kostet das Erbauen der Brücke „Fünfzigtausend Taler und ein Menschenleben“.
Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wird der Kromlauer Park und damit auch die Rakotzbrücke im Zuge der Bodenreform zum Volkseigentum. Im Jahr 1966 kommt es zur Rekonstruktion des Parks. Heutiger Eigentümer ist die Gemeinde Gablenz. Seit über 50 Jahren findet jedes Jahr zu Pfingsten das Park- und Blütenfest statt.
Inzwischen steht die Rakotzbrücke unter Denkmalschutz. Das Betreten ist verboten. Um Kletterer abzuschrecken, hat die Gemeinde einen Zaun gebaut. Für die Dauer der Sanierungsarbeiten ist der Wasserstand des Rakotzsees gesenkt.
Der Rhododendronpark Kromlau

Der Rhododendronpark gehört zu den größten Parkanlagen Sachsens. Nicht nur während der Blütezeit beeindrucken besondere Gehölze Groß und Klein. Dazu gehören beispielsweise die etwa 150 Jahre alten Tulpenbäume. Sie blühen im Juni. Im Herbst leuchten sie gelb. Ebenso alt sind die Rotbuchen, Hängebuchen, Blutbuchen und Sommerlinden. Im Mai blühen tausende von Rhododendren, die dem Park ihren Namen geben.

The history of the Rakotz Bridge

In 1842, the large landowner Friedrich Hermann Rötschke acquired the Kromlau estate. In the following years, the Kromlau Park was created in the style of an English landscape park. Basalt stones from quarries in Saxon Switzerland are used to create grottos, sculptures such as the organ and architectural features such as the flight of steps. From 1863 to 1883, Friedrich Hermann Rötschke had the Rakotz Bridge built. It spans the 35-metre-wide Rakotzsee.
The building material consists of fieldstone and basalt. The dark, magmatic rock is of volcanic origin. The fieldstones in Lusatia consist mainly of greywacke, gneiss, granite and granodiorite. Large, angular basalt columns line the arched bridge. Basalt columns, called organs, rise out of the water of Lake Rakotz next to the bridge. The builders also transported basalt stones from Saxon Switzerland for the bridge.
During the 20-year construction phase, wooden girders support the bridge. When they were removed in 1882, Traugott Wolsch, a carpenter from Gablenz, lost his life. He is commemorated by a memorial plaque. According to a report by the chronicler Aisch, the construction of the bridge cost "fifty thousand thalers and one human life".
After the Second World War, the Kromlau Park and with it the Rakotz Bridge became national property in the course of the land reform. The park was reconstructed in 1966. Today it is owned by the municipality of Gablenz. For over 50 years, the park and blossom festival has taken place every year at Whitsun.
The Rakotz Bridge is now a listed building. It is forbidden to enter. To deter climbers, the municipality has built a fence. The water level of the Rakotzsee has been lowered for the duration of the renovation work.
The Kromlau Rhododendron Park

The Rhododendron Park is one of the largest parks in Saxony. Special trees and shrubs impress young and old, and not only during the flowering season. These include, for example, the tulip trees, which are about 150 years old. They blossom in June. In autumn they glow yellow. Equally old are the copper beeches, weeping beeches, copper beeches and lime trees. In May, thousands of rhododendrons bloom, giving the park its name.
