Methodist itinerant preachers first served the Methodist community in Winsted at a time when the Congregational church was the state supported church. After the American Revolution the laws were changed and in 1790 the Methodist Church was founded and they built their first church in 1807. By 1818 Connecticut had full religious freedom. In 1834 the Methodist built a new church at the site of their present church. The cornerstone was laid for the Winsted United Methodist Church in 1903 and the completed church building was dedicated in 1904.
The Romanesque Revival building is built of granite blocks. A flight of steps leading up to a double entrance framed by rounded arches is located on the southwest corner of the building. Above the entrances facing Main Street is a semi-hexagonal section with three windows framed by rounded arches. Above is a hexagonal roof with a finial on top.
Flanking the entrance block are a pair if identical gable ends. Each end has five windows the basement level eight windows at the first level and a large stained glass window flanked by smaller stained glass windows. These three windows are framed by rounded arches.
The end of the building has a gable end with four windows the basement level four windows at the first level and a large stained glass window flanked by smaller stained glass windows. These three windows are framed by rounded arches.
Between the gable ends facing Main Street is a flight of steps leading up to a projecting tower. The base of the tower has a third entrance within a rounded arch. Above are three small square windows and three slender windows. The center window has four parts the other two have three parts. The top part of all the windows are topped with rounded arches. At the top of the tower is a belfry with a large seven part window framed by a rounded arch. The lower two section are partially open. The remaining windows are closed. The tower has a pyramidal roof which is topped by a brass five-part flower-like finial.
