In 1918 the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads undertook construction of a forest road from the Roosevelt basin in south central Arizona to the isolated ranching community of Young. Young is about 45 miles north of the Roosevelt basin. This required construction of a bridge across the Salt River. A site was chosen where the river squeezed through two cliffs. The bridge was completed in 1920 and continues in service and is rated in satisfactory condition. It is a Parker type of through truss bridge. It was riveted in place and spans the river between two concrete buttresses. It is one of only five truss bridges in the state that remains in its original site. It is a single lane bridge and continues to provide access to the community of Young.
