From this unassuming spot in northern Minnesota, the mighty Mississippi River begins its 2300+ mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. River origins are rarely spectacular locales, and this is no exception, but considering the river’s length and importance, Lake Itasca has become quite the tourist destination.

Determining a river’s origin is not always as straightforward as it may seem, especially since there’s no consensus among geologists on exactly what constitutes a river’s origin. This spot was determined to be the start of the Mississippi River in 1832 by an expedition led by geologist Henry R. Schoolcraft. There’s another small lake further upstream from Lake Itasca and the small stream connecting the two is labeled ‘Mississippi River’ on some maps. But during drought years that stream is not always flowing. Anyway, it’s a moot point as far as this waymark is concerned since it’s Lake Itasca that’s pictured on the stamp.
