(1870) D'azur à la barque montée par cinq hommes, dont l'un d'entre eux s'apprête à harponner une baleine qui plonge dans les flots, le tout au naturel; au chef d'or chargé de trois coquilles au naturel, celle de senestre disparaissant sous un franc-canton de gueules à l'étoile d'argent.
Devise: « aura sidus mare adjuvant me » (j'ai pour moi les vents, les astres et la mer).
Ces astres rappellent que, durant plusieurs siècles, la principale richesse des habitants de Biarritz consista dans le produit de la pêche à la baleine, pêche qu'ils durent abandonner à la fin du XVIe siècle, ce cétacé ayant quitté nos parages. Il est à présumer que cette profession fut pratiquée dès le Moyen Age, car, vers le milieu du XlVe, apparait un sceau représentant les pêcheurs de baleine et portant en exergue: Sigillum consilii de Beiarriz. Le blason de Biarritz a été composé à une date indéterminée d'après ce sceau du XlVe siècle.

Motto: "aura sidus mare adjuvant me" (I have for me the winds, the stars and the sea).
These stars remind us that, for several centuries, the main wealth of the inhabitants of Biarritz consisted in the product of whale fishing, which they had to abandon at the end of the 16th century, this cetacean having left our area. It is to be presumed that this profession was practiced as early as the Middle Ages, because, towards the middle of the 15th century, a seal appears representing the whale fishermen and bearing in exergue: Sigillum consilii de Beiarriz. The coat of arms of Biarritz was composed at an undetermined date according to this seal of the XlVth century.

Jusqu'à la fin du XVIème siècle, les produits de la pêche à la baleine constituaient la principale richesse des habitants de Biarritz. La légende raconte qu'une jeune fille du nom de Miarritze eu une vision du Dieu Yahvé qui lui promit d'envoyer sur le territoire abandonné l'âme de Martin, son serviteur. Celui ci apparaîtrait sous forme d'un oiseau au plumage coloré qui porterait dans son bec un poisson aux écailles d'or, symbole de la richesse et du bien être qui naîtraientt sur cette côte. Le discours de la jeune fille réussit à convaincre les habitants qui quelques jours plus tard repérèrent un merveilleux passereau, en fait un Martin-pêcheur. Cet événement, sur les encouragements de Miarritze, poussa les habitants à construire des embarcations pour affronter la mer. Ils se lancèrent dans l'aventure de la pêche, en particulier des baleines qui folâtraient, nombreuses, au large.
Les coquillages sont des coquilles Saint Jacques et font référence à la route de Saint Jacques de Compostelle. L'étoile est celle qui guide les marins pêcheurs en mer.

Until the end of the 16th century, the products of whale fishing constituted the main wealth of the inhabitants of Biarritz. Legend has it that a young girl named Miarritze had a vision of the God Yahweh who promised to send the soul of Martin, his servant, to the abandoned territory. He would appear in the form of a bird with colorful plumage that would carry in its beak a fish with golden scales, symbol of the wealth and well-being that would be born on this coast. The speech of the young girl succeeded in convincing the inhabitants who a few days later spotted a wonderful sparrow, in fact a Kingfisher. This event, with the encouragement of Miarritze, pushed the inhabitants to build boats to face the sea. They started to fish, especially for whales, which were numerous in the open sea.
The shells are scallop shells and refer to the road to Santiago de Compostela. The star is the one that guides the fishermen at sea.
