Omschrijving

Bronzen standbeeld van J.P. Minckelers - de uitvinder van de gasverlichting - in priesterkledij, met brandende toorts in de hand en vloeistofbak met blaasbalg. Hardstenen sokkel op een dubbel getrapt hardstenen basement. Aan de voorzijde de opschriften "Johannes Petrus Minckelers" en "opgericht met vrijwillige bijdragen", aan de achterzijde de tekst "geboren te Maastricht 2 december 1748 Overleden aldaar 4 juli 1824". Aan weerszijden van de sokkel twee bronzen reliëfs van de hand van Bart van Hove.

Waardering

Het standbeeld van Minckelers is van belang als een cultuurhistorische uiting die herinnert aan een technologische ontwikkeling: de uitvinding van de gasverlichting.

Het standbeeld is een belangrijk onderdeel van de Maastrichtste binnenstad, heeft een opvallende plaats aan de rand van de Markt en is van belang voor het aanzien van de binnenstad. Het beeld verkeert in een gave toestand en is van belang in relatie tot de visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving.

Description

Bronze statue of J.P. Minckelers - inventor of gas lighting - in priestly garb, with burning torch in hand and liquid container with bellows. Hard stone base on a double stepped hard stone base. On the front the inscriptions 'Johannes Petrus Minckelers' and 'founded with voluntary contributions', on the back the text 'born in Maastricht December 2, 1748 Died there July 4, 1824'. Two bronze reliefs by Bart van Hove on either side of the pedestal.

Valuation

The statue of Minckelers is important as a cultural-historical expression that recalls a technological development: the invention of gas lighting.

The statue is an important part of the city center of Maastricht, has a prominent place on the edge of the Market and is important for the appearance of the city center. The statue is in an undamaged condition and is important in relation to the visual integrity of the urban environment.

Base en pierre dure sur une base en pierre dure à double gradin. Au recto les inscriptions 'Johannes Petrus Minckelers' et 'fondé avec des contributions volontaires', au verso le texte 'né à Maastricht le 2 décembre 1748 y est mort le 4 juillet 1824'. Deux reliefs en bronze de Bart van Hove de part et d'autre du piédestal.
