The Conservatory Garden is the only area of Central Park that is not accessible from within the park, you must enter through the wrought iron gate at 105th street and 5th avenue. It is also the only area of the park that ever "closes." The hours vary from season to season, but are typically 8am to early evening.

The Conservatory Garden was originally the site of a greenhouse and arboretum, which were destroyed in 1935 and replaced by a formal Italian style garden. Like the rest of Central Park the Conservatory fell into disrepair in the 70's, but was fully restored in the 1980's.

The wisteria pergola sits atop a series of tiered yew and spiraea hedges that surround a fountain. It is accessed by a series of steps at either end of the pergola that pass through small gardens of crab apple trees. Wisteria covers the pergola itself, which typically blooms in early May. The stone walkway beneath the pergola is lined with wooden benches, and includes medallions inscribed with the names of the original 13 US states.

The pergola is a popular venue for weddings and other events.
