The wish to found a church in Nieuwerbrug became reality in 1917. The Reformed believers were no longer forced to travel to Waarder or Bodegraven because of the construction of the Reformed Church. Architect Cornelis Zaal from Bodegraven designed the church building that was inaugurated on New Year's Day 1918. A church with a tower "De Peperbus", but without a clock. They had to rely on the Independence Tower to ring it. Major maintenance was carried out on and in the church several times, the last time in 2010. In that year the building was thoroughly restored and a loud bell was installed in the new tower.
In 2004 the name Reformed Church was changed to Protestantse Gemeente Nieuwerbrug and the church building was given the name Brugkerk, a connection of past and present between God and people.
