The Gem Theater was built in 1942 to replace a previous Gem that had burned on December 7, 1941. It operated until 1984 when it closed. It then operated as a live music venue, the Sugar Loaf Opry, but by 1995 it had fallen into a serious state of disrepair. It was almost razed, but saved once again and rebuilt inside in a style that complimented the Art-Deco exterior. It served as a live music venue again, and in 2016 returned to showing first run movies.
