De omgeving rond het stadhuis en het nieuwe stadskantoor ziet er heel anders uit. Met meer groen, bankjes en 52 verlichte fonteinen. Hengelo heeft er een heringericht plein en een waterattractie bij.
Hier worden we blij van: Hengelo heeft er een mooie waterattractie bij waar kinderen kunnen spelen. Op warme dagen kun je bij deze springende fonteinen verkoeling zoeken. En ’s avonds zorgen de verlichte fonteinen met ledverlichting voor sfeer op het plein. Omdat de gemeente hoopt dat het een ontmoetingsplein wordt, staan er ook bankjes.

And in the evening the illuminated fountains with LED lighting create an atmosphere on the square. Because the municipality hopes that it will become a meeting place, there are also benches.
The fountain installation has 13 jumping fountains. These alternately spray the water in arcs of 2.5 meters high. There are 3 fountains under each spring fountain, 39 in total. These spray the water vertically up to 1.5 meters high. Different heights, rhythms and colors can be set. The fountain will be on from about March to November.
Can you drink the water?
The answer is yes. The water will soon be of drinking water quality. A 14-meter-deep well has been dug under the square. This is in connection with sustainability, so that no drinking water has to be used. Controlled by ingenious measuring equipment, the well replenishes the water that evaporates in the summer. That spring supplies the fountain with water. The water is stripped of iron and purified 24 hours a day in a special buffer. A UV disinfection unit ensures that algae and legionella do not stand a chance. The water that comes out of the purification is clean and of drinking quality. A total of 8 cubic meters of water is needed for all fountains. Hold on tight: there is no less than a kilometer of pipework under the square.
De fonteininstallatie telt 13 springfonteinen. Deze spuiten afwisselend het water in bogen van 2,5 meter hoog. Onder elke springfontein bevinden zich 3 fonteinen, totaal 39 stuks. Deze spuiten het water verticaal tot 1,5 meter hoog. Er zijn verschillende hoogtes, ritmes en kleuren in te stellen. De fontein zal van ongeveer maart tot november aanstaan.
Kun je het water drinken?
Het antwoord is ja. Het water is straks van drinkwaterkwaliteit. Er is een 14 meter diepe bron onder het plein geslagen. Dit in verband met duurzaamheid, zodat er geen drinkwater hoeft te worden gebruikt. Aangestuurd door vernuftige meetapparatuur vult de bron het water aan dat in de zomer verdampt. Die bron voorziet de fontein van water. Het water wordt ontdaan van ijzer en in een speciale buffer 24 uur per dag gezuiverd. Een UV-desinfectie-unit zorgt ervoor dat algen en legionella geen kans krijgen. Het water dat uit de zuivering komt, is schoon en van drinkkwaliteit. Er is in totaal 8 kuub water nodig voor alle fonteinen. Hou je vast: er ligt maar liefst een kilometer leidingwerk onder het plein.
