Mobil-Chestnut Market Rest Stop is open 24 hours a day in the median of the Hutchinson River Parkway in White Plains, New York. A sign posted by the entrance on the northwest side of the building includes a
YOU ARE HERE map note. The yellow text and its accompanying arrow can be found at the lower third of the map just below Rte 287/Cross Westchester Expressway, surrounded by Hartsdale to the north, Scarsdale to the south, and Harrison to the east.
Titled across the top quarter of the plaque: "Presented by the Westchester County Dept. of Public Safety P.B.A. - Gary McGrath, Pres. - 'Pride in Service'". Though I was unable to find his exact dates of service, McGrath was president of the local Police Benevolent Association in the mid-1990's. I bring that up because at least three major landmarks represented on this long-standing board no longer exist from that time:
- The old Tappan Zee Bridge - Closed: October 2017; Demolished: 2019 (Replaced with the Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge, 2017)
- Yankee Stadium - Closed: November 2008; Demolished: 2009-10
- Shea Stadium - Closed: September 2008; Demolished: 2008-09
Drove by this spot several times over the years and finally had the chance to stop, stretch my legs, and snap some photos of the pine tree cell tower, too. Highest gas prices I've ever personally seen in the US: $5.19/gallon for Regular (87 octane) and $6.80/gallon for Diesel. (17 May 2022)
