Johann Michael Voltz (* 16. Oktober 1784 in Nördlingen; † 17.
Jahrhundert in Geschichtsbüchern abgebildet.

Johann Michael Voltz (* 16 October 1784 in Nördlingen; † 17 April 1858 ibid.) was apprenticed to the engraver and art dealer Friedrich Weber in Augsburg. After the end of his apprenticeship he became an employee of the academic bookshop Herzberg in Augsburg, for which he created popular prints. After a stay in Munich in 1808, Voltz joined the Bilderbogen publishing house of Friedrich Campe in Nuremberg in 1809, for whom he worked until his death. In total, Voltz's œuvre comprises about 5000 drawings and etchings.
Voltz's main focus was on depictions of battles and other contemporary historical events. He illustrated events of the Napoleonic wars since 1805, wars of liberation, even the Greek struggle for freedom. In addition, he drew histories ("Luther at the Diet of Worms") and genre pictures. Voltz became known as one of the few German political caricaturists of the early 19th century. His caricatures directed against Napoleon Bonaparte are still reproduced in history books in the 21st century.
