Geschichtlicher Hintergrund
1938 wurde das Schiffshebewerk in Dienst gestellt. Leipziger Konstrukteure entschieden sich damals für ein Prinzip, das bis dahin noch nirgendwo für ein Bauwerk dieser Größenordnung praktisch angewendet worden war: Ein Hebewerk, dessen Trog beweglich auf zwei Schwimmern ruhte.
Mit Hilfe des mit Wasser gefüllten Troges, der zusammen mit den zwei Schwimmern und den Traggerüsten ein Gesamtgewicht von rund 5.400 Tonnen aufweist, konnten so Schiffe vom Mittellandkanal und zur Elbe „absteigen“. Je nach Wasserstand der Elbe wird ein Gefälle zwischen 11 und 18 Metern ausgeglichen. Mit einer Troglänge von 85 Metern, einer Breite von 12 Metern und einer Wassertiefe im Trog von 2,5 Metern sind die Abmessungen für heutige Großmotorgüterschiffe jedoch zu gering.
Aus diesem Grund wurde das Schiffshebewerk 2006 stillgelegt. Seitdem engagiert sich die Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg unterstützt durch verschiedene Akteure unter breiter Zustimmung aus der Bevölkerung um den saisonalen Weiterbetrieb. Mit Erfolg: Seit Sommer 2013 wird das Schiffshebewerk saisonal für touristische Zwecke wieder betrieben.
Touristische Bedeutung
Das Schiffshebewerk in Magdeburg-Rothensee ist aufgrund seiner Technik und seiner Geschichte ein einzigartiges Denkmal. Es ist eine geniale Konstruktion, seine Errichtung war eine ingenieurtechnische Meisterleistung. Es ist das zweitälteste von nur vier noch in Betrieb befindlichen Hebewerken in Deutschland und das einzige noch betriebene Zweischwimmerhebewerk Deutschlands.
Ein Besuch ist schon deshalb lohnenswert, da die unmittelbare Nähe von hochmoderner Sparschleuse zum Schiffshebewerk, als historisch technischem Denkmal, die Entwicklungen in der Wassertransporttechnik sichtbar werden lässt.

Historical background
In 1938, the ship lift was put into service. At that time, Leipzig designers opted for a principle that had never before been used in practice for a structure of this size: a hoist whose trough rested movably on two floats.
With the help of the water-filled trough, which together with the two floats and the supporting structures has a total weight of around 5,400 tons, ships could thus "descend" from the Mittelland Canal and to the Elbe. Depending on the water level of the Elbe, a gradient of between 11 and 18 meters is compensated. However, with a trough length of 85 meters, a width of 12 meters and a water depth in the trough of 2.5 meters, the dimensions are too small for today's large motor cargo ships.
For this reason, the ship lift was decommissioned in 2006. Since then, the state capital Magdeburg, supported by various stakeholders and with broad approval from the population, has been committed to the seasonal continued operation. With success: since the summer of 2013, the ship lift has again been operated seasonally for tourist purposes.
Tourist significance
The ship lift in Magdeburg-Rothensee is a unique monument due to its technology and history. It is an ingenious construction, and its erection was an engineering feat. It is the second oldest of only four lifts still in operation in Germany and the only two-float lift still in operation in Germany.
