Voici ce qu’était le premier centre de Santé communautaire d’Orléans. C’était la résidence du docteur Emile Major, un descendant de Luc Major, un pionnier d’Orléans. Il demeurait ici dans cette maison avec sa famille. Une porte à droite donnait accès à son bureau au sous-sol. C’est ici que se pratiquait, sans rendez-vous des chirurgies mineures, des sutures de plaies et des extractions de dents avec ou sans anesthésie, par ce diplômé de l’Université McGill. Dévoué, il se rendait à domicile, jour ou nuit, pour soigner les malades. Les patients incapable de payer voyaient leurs dette annulée.

Le docteur Major a pratiqué plus de 1 000 accouchements, parmi lesquels sont nés de nombreux Orléanais. Son premier bébé orléanais fut Laurette Côté et 40 ans plus tard, à la même date, il était présent à la naissance de Ginette Côté, la nièce de Laurette.

À titre de coroner du district, et en collaboration avec les Forces Armées Canadiennes, il participa, en 1956, à l’enquête pour determiner les causes de l’écrasement de l’avion militaire sur la résidence Saint-Louis. Il a rédigé plusieurs documents qui se trouvent aujourd’hui au Centre de Recherche en civilisation canadienne-française de l’université d’Ottawa. En 1963, il fut nommé citoyen de l’année par la Chambre de Commerce d’Orléans pour son leadership au sein de la Communauté.

Office of Doctor Émile Major:

This site housed the first community health centre in Orléans. Doctor Émile Major, lived here with his family. A door on the right opened into his office in the basement, where this graduate of McGill University practiced. No appointment was required; minor surgery, stitching of wounds, and extraction of teeth, with or without anesthetic were part of his practice. Highly dedicated, he made house calls day or night to treat the sick. Patients unable to pay would have their debt cancelled.

Dr. Émile Major delivered 1000 babies, among them many Orléans newborn. His first Orléans baby was Laurette Côté, and 40 years later, on the same date, he presided at the birth of Laurette’s niece Ginette Côté.

As the District coroner and in collaboration with the Canadian Armed Forces, in 1956, he was involved with the investigation into the causes of the crash of a military aircraft into the Saint-Louis Residence.

This descendant of an Orléans founder wrote several documents, which are now held at the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Research on French Canadian culture. In 1963, the Orléans Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the year in recognition of his leadership in the Community.
