The Pineland Archeological District was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Place in 1973 as #73000583, also known as Battey's Landing, Battey Place and Pineland Site.
The site is a series of Mounds which dated back to 500 BCE until 1700 when the area was used by the Calusa. These people were often ate fish and shellfish, remnants of which are plentiful at the sites. The mounds include the Brown's Mound, Old Mound and Smith Mound. Also notable are the Pine Island Canal, the Surf Clam and Citrus Ridges.
The plaque is located at the base of the Brown Mound. The area is managed by the University of Florida Foundation and features the Randell Research Center which is operated by the Florida Museum of Natural History.
Neary the Brown Mound is the Calusa Heritage Trail. There is no charge for walking the ground but a donation is appreciated.
