In 1939, Romualdo de Madariaga designed this beautiful rationalist building to house the Bank of Spain, until it closed in the 1980s. Ten years later it became the Casa das Artes, the main space in Vigo to house temporary municipal exhibitions. .
This new headquarters of the Bank of Spain branch came to replace the old one on Oporto Street (building of the old Rectorate).
The definitive project, by Romualdo de Madariaga, was signed in 1938 and presents some changes in relation to the previous one, designed before 1936, as the neo-baroque character of the main access and other decorative details had to be removed, to give it a new image of sobriety. and austerity.
In it we can highlight the main access, decorated with two reliefs of human figures, located on the lateral pilasters of the chamfer, and inside, the large central courtyard illuminated through a stained glass window, and the layout of the offices, located in a circle on the patio itself.
