La devoción a la Virgen María fue un rasgo importante en la vida de San José de Calasanz, que transmitió a las Escuelas Pías. Como religioso firmó "José de la Madre de Dios" y a la Orden le dio por título
"Clérigos regulares pobres de la Madre de Dios de las Escuelas Pías".
El escudo escolapio acuña esa devoción.
