"In 1541, Jacques Cartier bought a farm built the previous century on the heights of Rothéneuf. He is going to transform it into a summer residence, adding a floor and a tower in front. He also fitted out a bedroom from which he could see the sea. He died in this mansion in 1557. During the 19th century, the mansion again became a farm. In 1893, the name of Limoilou was given to a new municipality, today a district of Quebec City.

The term limoëlou means “bald mound” in Breton. The mansion is indeed on a height where trees are scarce due to the wind.

The mansion was bought in 1984, for the 450 years of exploration of Canada, and transformed into a Jacques-Cartier museum. Most of the pieces have regained their former function. Exhibitions and various activities are organized within the museum."

" En 1541, Jacques Cartier achète une ferme construite le siècle précédent sur les hauteurs de Rothéneuf. Il va la transformer en résidence d’été, lui ajoutant un étage et une tour en façade. Il aménage également une chambre d'où il peut voir la mer. Il meurt dans ce manoir en 1557. Au cours du XIXe siècle, le manoir redevient une ferme. En 1893, le nom de Limoilou fut donné à une nouvelle municipalité, aujourd'hui un arrondissement de la ville de Québec.

Le terme limoëlou signifie « tertre chauve » en breton. Le manoir se trouve effectivement sur une hauteur où les arbres sont rares en raison du vent.

Le manoir est racheté et en 1984, pour les 450 ans de l'exploration du Canada, et transformé en musée Jacques-Cartier. La plupart des pièces ont retrouvé leur fonction d'autrefois. Des expositions et diverses animations sont organisées dans l'enceinte du musée. "
