A Sami Altar can be seen in Nidaros Cathedral. It was inaugurated on 6 February 2017, the 100th anniversary of the Sami's first national meeting in Trondheim.
The altar can be seen in the southern transept inside the cathedral and was made by the South Sami artist Folke Fjällström from Våladalen in Sweden. The altar is made of oiled birch, and consists of four half arches that frame a Christ figure.
The many different ornaments on the altar have a double property in the Sami tradition. It is both decorative and meaningful. The ornamentation consists of characters, parallel lines, borders and different pattern surfaces with wickerwork ornamentation. Triangular sticks represent different relationships between people, nature and the powers. The location of the pattern borders along the arches provides the context for the interpretation of nature and forces of nature.
