The Herman B. VanPeyma House is significant as a locally significant distint example of the eclectic design patterns of the 19th century in Lancaster, incorporating elements from the Queen Anne, Stick, and Colonial Revival style of architecture. The house was built circa 1890 on the site of the Rev. Theodotus Burwell's "Oakwood Insitute", and ill-fated and short lived mid-19th century educational experiment.

The circa 1890 house was built for Herman Boetkhout VanPeyma, the son of James W. and Jetske Klaasesz VanPeyma, who were among the Dutch immigrants who came to Lancaster in 1849 and were known as "Hollanders." Herman VanPeyma taught for several years in Town of Lancaster distric schools and also worked as a civil engineer for the Erie Railroad. He read law in the offices of Day and Rohmer and was admitted to the Bar in 1879, after which he opened his own practice. He became a prominent Western New York practitioner and lived in this house until his death.
