The summit of Mt. Frissell is reached by the appropriately named Mt. Frissell Trail. This trail begins on Mt. Washington Rd. right where it crosses the Massachusetts-Connecticut border and ends at the South Taconic Trail in New York. It’s a little over two miles long (one way).

Most folks who make use of the Mt. Frissell Trail are not interested in summiting Mt. Frissell. Rather, they’re pursuing two other geographical points of interest along the trail: the highpoint of Connecticut and the New York-Massachusetts-Connecticut tripoint marker. There is a register for visitors at the summit, nevertheless.

Connecticut is the only state whose highpoint is not at the top of something: a peak or a hill. The highpoint marker is actually a border marker located at the border’s highest point along the south side of Mt. Frissell, a few hundred feet past the summit. And, as if that’s not bad enough, Connecticut’s name was left off the tri-state marker, possibly due to a border dispute dating back to colonial days. The tri-state marker is about a third of a mile past the highpoint marker.
Altitude in Feet: 2454
