Memorial stone at the sites of the two golden horns from the Iron Age. The first and largest Golden Horn was found at Gallehus on 20 July 1639 and was found by Kirsten Svend's Daughter. The golden horn was handed over to the King and as a thank you Kirsten Svend's daughter got a skirt. The golden horn weighed 3.1 kg and was 71 cm long.
On April 21, 1734, the second golden horn was found by Erik Lassen, a few meters from the first golden horn. It was shorter but weighed 3.5 kg.
The horns are interpreted as drinking horns or signal horns and are dated to around the fifth century. The horns were decorated with animals, fish, humans and star motifs as well as two snakes winding. The motifs are preserved on drawings. And that's lucky, because the golden horns were stolen and melted down in 1802.
At the National Museum in Copenhagen you can see copies of the two golden horns.
