"Meeker (pop. 502), is a trading center for the surrounding fertile farm lands, forming the divide between the North Canadian River and its tributary stream to the north, the Deep Fork. Meeker is the home town of Carl Hubbell, well-known (1941) pitcher for the New York Giants baseball club."The WPA Guide to 1930s Oklahoma, 1941
Today, Meeker is still a small town of about 1130 residents. It lies about 45 miles east of Oklahoma City at the intersection of State Highways 62 and 18. City Hall is located at 510 Carl Hubbell Blvd. and in this same building is the fire department and the Carl Hubbell Museum.
Born June 22, 1903 in Carthage, Missouri Carl Hubbell came to Meeker as a toddler. He joined the New York Giants system in 1928 and played in 16 seasons, retiring in 1943. He was a left-handed pitcher, specializing in the screwball. Elected MVP in 1933 and 1936, he was selected for the All-Star team nine times, played in three World Series and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Upon retirement, Hubbell continued to work for the Giants franchise for 35 years, in player development and as a scout. Carl Hubbell passed away after an auto accident on November 21, 1988 at the age of 85.
The town of Meeker has a typical small-town atmosphere, providing for itself, serving its residents and providing a comfortable place to live and raise your children.
