The Sacred Heart Mission was established in 1877, long before statehood, and soon became a center of Catholicism in Oklahoma. The name was changed to "Sacred Heart" in 1888 and the area was opened to settlement. The Mission soon included a bakery, a blacksmith shop, and boarding schools for both boys and girls. A nearby farm was developed to supply food to the Mission. A fire swept through the complex in 1901, destroying almost every building, and the educational facilities were moved elsewhere, eventually becoming St. Gregory's in Shawnee. However, the stately Gothic Revival church was constructed in 1914. The town faded away and the Post Office closed in 1954. The Church and adjoining cemetery are all that remain of Sacred Heart, now listed as a ghost town. A pink granite marker north of the church provides some history of the area.
