Montauk Point, sometimes colloquially called “the end,” is the easternmost point of Long Island in New York. This lighthouse was authorized by an act of Congress when George Washington was President of the United States. At that time, it was the first lighthouse in the state of New York. Its purpose was to guide ships sailing from Europe around the southern side of Long Island into New York Harbor. The lighthouse is still in operation today.
The tower as originally built stood about 80 ft. tall. It has undergone all the usual lighthouse upgrades through the years including heightening the tower to 110 ft. in 1860. George Washington famously boasted that this tower would stand for 200 years. In 1996, that prediction came true, nevertheless, the tower is threatened by erosion of the cliff face below it.
Montauk Point Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been named a National Historic Landmark.
