Mahnmal an der A57 erinnert nicht nur an Brandopfer
Dormagen - Eine neue Skulptur auf der A57 an der Raststätte Nievenheim hält das Gedenken wach an das Feuer 2012, bei dem es einen Toten und 13 Verletzte gegeben hatte – und an alle, die im Straßenverkehr zu Schaden kamen.
Holger Hagedorn wirkte am Freitagmittag sehr gelöst. "Ich bin unglaublich froh, dass das Mahnmal jetzt aufgestellt worden ist", sagte der Pulheimer Künstler, der 1985 sein Abitur am Norbert-Gymnasium Knechtsteden gemacht hat, beim Ortstermin auf dem Gelände der Raststätte Nievenheim. Dort, in Fahrtrichtung Neuss, steht jetzt seine mehrteilige Skulptur "Korpus Delikti A57". Das Kunstwerk ist den Opfern des verheerenden Brandes vom Februar 2012 gewidmet, aber auch allen anderen Menschen, die im Straßenverkehr zu Schaden kamen und kommen.
Damals hatten Brandstifter unter einer Autobahnbrücke bei Nievenheim Feuer gelegt. Pechschwarzer Qualm zog auf. Der dichte Rauch sorgte für eine tödliche Massenkarambolage — sechs Lkw und 15 Autos krachten ineinander, ein Fahrer starb, 13 weitere wurden verletzt.
Hagedorns Werk besteht aus zwei hoch aufragenden Teilen, mit denen sich Flügel eines Todesengels assoziieren lassen, und aus einem großen und 13 kleineren Steinen. Die beiden "Flügel" sind Überbleibsel von Kunststoffrohren, Asphalt und Brückenteilen, die bei dem Feuer miteinander verschmolzen waren und von Hagedorn bearbeitet wurden. Der große Findling, der zwischen den Flügeln liegt, steht symbolisch für den Toten des von Brandstiftern verursachten Feuers vor gut vier Jahren. Er trägt eine Gedenktafel der Stadt Dormagen und des Landesbetriebs Straßen NRW. Die drumherum gruppierten kleineren Findlinge symbolisieren die bei dem Unglück Verletzten.
Die Idee zu der Skulptur habe er gleich am Tag nach dem Unglück gehabt, erzählte Hagedorn: "Ich saß in Allerheiligen beim Kaffee, sah ein Bild in der Zeitung und dachte beim ersten Hingucken, da habe jemand meine Kunst imitiert. Die verschmolzenen Reste von der Unglücksstelle wirkten wie meine Schaumstoffobjekte, die ich für die deutsche Botschaft in Paris angefertigt hatte." Erst bei genauerem Studieren des Fotos habe er erkannt, um was es sich wirklich handelte.
Polizei und der damals zuständige Mitarbeiter der Landesbehörde Straßen NRW, Arne Müller, hätten auf Anfrage hin die Reste sehr schnell für ihn zur Verwendung freigegeben. "Das ging alles ganz unbürokratisch." Danach wurde es schwieriger. Bis alle Formalitäten geklärt waren und das Mahnmal am Freitag endlich platziert werden konnte, vergingen über vier Jahre. Hagedorn lagerte die Teile unterdessen bei sich zu Hause in Pulheim. Welch enorme Hitze 2012 am Brandort herrschte, habe er bei der Bearbeitung der Stücke nachvollziehen können. "Die sind eigentlich ungeheuer schwer entflammbar", stellte der 50-Jährige fest.
Der jetzige Standort auf einer Verkehrsinsel nahe der Autobahnkapelle und dem Raststättengebäude ist allerdings noch nicht der endgültige. Wegen des Ausbaus des Raststättenareals, unter anderem für mehr Lkw-Parkplätze, müssten Insel und Kunstwerk später noch ein Stückchen versetzt werden, sagte Andreas Raedt, Leiter Betrieb und Verkehr bei der Krefelder Autobahnniederlassung von Straßen NRW: "Der genaue Termin steht noch nicht fest, aber mit dem Ausbau des Geländes soll noch in diesem Jahr begonnen werden."

Hagedorn's work consists of two towering parts, with which the wings of an angel of death can be associated, and one large and 13 smaller stones. The two "wings" are remnants of plastic pipes, asphalt and parts of the bridge that had melted together during the fire and were worked on by Hagedorn. The large boulder that lies between the wings symbolizes the dead in the fire caused by arsonists a good four years ago. He bears a plaque of the city of Dormagen and the State Office for Roads in North Rhine-Westphalia. The smaller boulders grouped around it symbolize those injured in the accident.
He had the idea for the sculpture the day after the accident, said Hagedorn: "I was having coffee in All Saints' Day, saw a picture in the newspaper and thought when I looked at it for the first time that someone had imitated my art. " It was only when he studied the photo more closely that he realized what it was really about.
Police and the then responsible employee of the state authority for roads in North Rhine-Westphalia, Arne Müller, would have released the leftovers very quickly for him to use on request. "It was all very unbureaucratic." After that it got more difficult. It took more than four years until all the formalities were clarified and the memorial could finally be placed on Friday. Hagedorn meanwhile stored the parts at his home in Pulheim. He was able to understand the enormous heat at the scene of the fire in 2012 when he was working on the pieces. "They are actually extremely flame-retardant," stated the 50-year-old.
However, the current location on a traffic island near the motorway chapel and the service station building is not yet the final one. Due to the expansion of the service station area, including for more truck parking spaces, the island and artwork would have to be moved a little later, said Andreas Raedt, Head of Operations and Traffic at the Krefeld Autobahn branch of Straßen NRW: "The exact date has not yet been set, but the expansion of the site should begin this year."
