The Chicago Botanic Garden, which first opened to the public in 1972, was the culmination of the vision and effort of members of the Chicago Horticultural Society which still manages the gardens to this day. It is located on a parcel of formerly swampy forest preserve land in the suburbs just north of the city. In fact, the gardens are still owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
Chicago’s official motto is Urbs in Horto which roughly translates as “Garden City” or “City in a Garden.” The Chicago Horticultural Society was formed in 1890 with the mission of helping the city stay true to that motto. One of the first events hosted by the Chicago Horticultural Society was a Chrysanthemum show held in conjunction with the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893.
Several of the most preeminent horticulturalists and landscape architects of the day were employed in the planning and layout of the gardens. Today, according to their own website, the Chicago Botanic Garden consists of 27 discrete gardens and four distinct natural areas covering almost 400 acres. The stamp specifically shows the Japanese Garden, which is located on three small islands just opposite the Waterfall Garden.
