The town of Montrose lies on the east coast of Scotland on a spit of land between the tidal Montrose Basin and the North Sea. A strip of open land, named Mid-Links, runs from north to south just east of the town centre, and is split into small parks. One of the areas was donated to the town by Miss Hope Paton, the daughter of a local merchant, in 1902. A bowling green occupied the site, and the town's war memorial to those who fell in WWI was erected to the south in 1921.
After WWII, a further 113 names were added on four granite blocks, sculpted by William Lamb. The names and units are inscribed in black lettering under the year of their death, along with the civilians in the town who died during bombing raids on the town, the nearby R.A.F. base and town's harbour being the principal targets.
