First United Methodist Church is one of the oldest churches in Pittsfield. It was designed in the Gothic Revival style by local architect Charles Rathbun, built by the firm of Butler and Merrill, and dedicated on May 5, 1874. The red brick church complex is 175' long along Fenn Street with a dramatic setting at the north end of Allen street.

The westernmost block has a gable roof which is oriented north-south. It is five bays wide with a central recessed entrance framed by a Gothic arch and flanked by a double set of Gothic style windows. There are four matching windows evenly spaced on the second level followed by a large rose stained glass window.

To the east is a taller tower which ha a wider recessed entrance framed by a Gothic arch. Above is a set one of three narrower windows with the taller one in the center. This is followed by a belfry with double louvered windows and a small rose window at the top. The steeple for the tower was damaged and removed.

The east side has a large block with a cross gable roof which is oriented east-west. The protruding central section has a two story high, five-panel stained glass window with an intricate series of diamond shaped windows ending in a pointed arch. Above and protruding from the roof is a dormer. To either side of this section is a single by with a double stained glass windows with a small rose window at the top. At the southeast corner is a 3½ story high tower.

The First United Methodist Church is listed as a contributing structure to the Park Square Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
