Charles N. DeGlopper, a resident of Grand Island, was a U.S. Army war hero who posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the U.S. Military. He also received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. DeGlopper gave his life in the Battle of Normandy, during WWII.

On June 9, 1944, PFC DeGlopper, a member of Company C, 325th Glider Infantry, saved members of his platoon from death at the hands of German Forces in LaFiere, France. He sprayed the enemy with assault fire and even though he was gravely wounded, DeGlopper knelt in the road and kept firing until he was killed. He was the only member of his Company to receive the Medal of Honor.

This Memorial honors PFC DeGlopper and other Grand Island residents who gave their lives defending our country.
