't Gasthuys est un musée de la ville belge d'Alost consacré à l'archéologie, aux arts appliqués, à l'histoire de la ville d'Alost et à certains résidents éminents d'Alost.
Site
Le site est le plus ancien noyau d'Alost. Les investigations pédologiques ont mis en évidence des outils en silex datant de l'Épipaléolithique. Des traces de l'époque romaine et mérovingienne ont également été retrouvées. Au début du Moyen Âge, le Zelhof a été établi sur ce site, un vroonhoeve dont le bâtiment principal se compose d'une salle. La ville s'est développée à partir d'ici.
Imeuble
Au XIIIe siècle, Jeanne de Constantinople et son mari Thomas de Savoie donnent ce terrain pour y installer un complexe hospitalier avec un monastère. Au fil des siècles, le complexe de l'hôpital Notre-Dame a été continuellement agrandi et rénové (un plan de la ville de Ludovico Guicciardini de 1581 montre l'hôpital sans infirmerie ; une carte de Sanderus de 1644 montre déjà la nouvelle infirmerie et le nouveau bâtiment du monastère). La fonction hospitalière a été conservée jusqu'à ce qu'un bâtiment plus spacieux et plus moderne soit érigé à un autre endroit en 1899. Depuis lors, les bâtiments ont été utilisés à diverses fins : de l'académie de musique et des arts aux refuges pour les familles pendant et après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Guerre mondiale. Musée
En 1903, une partie de l'ensemble était déjà utilisée par le 'Cercle Antique de la Ville et de l'ancien Land d'Alost' 'Société Archéologique de la ville et de l'ancien Pars d'Alost', de sorte qu'une fonction muséale était déjà attribuée à ce site. Jusqu'à la Première Guerre mondiale, la collection s'agrandit énormément, tant par les achats que par les dons. Le donateur le plus important fut Edmond De Deyn, maire de Ninove et membre du Cercle, dont une grande partie de la collection fut léguée au musée après sa mort. Parmi les pièces spéciales, on trouve une tapisserie du XVIe siècle, une collection d'anciennes presses à imprimer et d'équipements d'impression, ainsi qu'un ancien tuyau d'incendie à vapeur. La collection a également été complétée par des œuvres sur ou avec du papier et des graphiques.

Après une restauration complète du complexe hospitalier Onze-Lieve-Vrouw en 1959-1965, l'ensemble du bâtiment est utilisé comme musée municipal. Le bâtiment n'a été protégé en tant que patrimoine culturel qu'en 1991

't Gasthuys is a museum in the Belgian city of Aalst dedicated to archaeology, applied arts, the history of the city of Aalst and some prominent residents of Aalst.
Site
The site is the oldest core of Aalst. Soil investigations revealed silex tools dating from the Epipaleolithic. Traces from the Roman and Merovingian period were also found. During the early Middle Ages, the Zelhof was established on this site, a vroonhoeve whose main building consists of a hall. The city developed further from here.
Building
In the thirteenth century, Joanna of Constantinople and her husband Thomas of Savoy gave this piece of land to set up a hospital complex with a monastery. Over the centuries, the Our Lady's Hospital complex has been continuously expanded and renovated (A city plan by Ludovico Guicciardini from 1581 shows the hospital without an infirmary; a map by Sanderus from 1644 already shows the new infirmary and monastery building). The hospital function was maintained until a more spacious and modern building was erected at a different location in 1899. Museum
In 1903, part of the complex was already used by the 'Antique Circle of the City and the former Land of Aalst' 'Société Archéologique de la ville et de l'ancien Pars d' Alost', so that a museum function was already assigned to this site. De site is de oudste kern van Aalst. Bij bodemonderzoek werden silex werktuigen aangetroffen die dateren uit het epipaleolithicum. Ook uit de Romeinse en Merovingische periode werden sporen aangetroffen. Tijdens de vroege middeleeuwen werd op deze plaats het Zelhof opgericht, een vroonhoeve waarvan het hoofdgebouw uit een zaal bestaat. Van hieruit ontwikkelde de stad zich verder.
Gebouw
In de dertiende eeuw staan Johanna van Constantinopel en haar man Thomas van Savoye dit stuk grond af om er een hospitaalcomplex met klooster op te richten. Doorheen de eeuwen werd het complex Onze-Lieve-Vrouwhospitaal voortdurend uitgebreid en vernieuwd (Een stadsplan van Ludovico Guicciardini uit 1581 toont het hospitaal zonder ziekenzaal; op een kaart van Sanderus uit 1644 zijn reeds de nieuwe ziekenzaal en kloostergebouw afgebeeld). De hospitaalfunctie bleef behouden tot de oprichting van een ruimer en moderner gebouw op een andere locatie in 1899. Museum
In 1903 werd een deel van het complex reeds gebruikt door de ’Oudheidkundige Kring van de Stad en het voormalige Land van Aalst 'Société Archéologique de la ville et de l’ancien Pars d’ Alost’, waardoor toen reeds een museumfunctie werd toegewezen aan deze site. Tot de Eerste Wereldoorlog groeit de collectie enorm aan, zowel door aankopen als door schenkingen. Belangrijkste schenker was Edmond De Deyn, burgemeester van Ninove en lid van de Kring, van wiens collectie een omvangrijk deel aan het museum werd geschonken na zijn dood. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog worden vooral nog kunstwerken en schilderijen aangekocht (o.a. Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Frans Floris, Valerius De Saedeleer), en groeit de collectie minder expansief aan. Onder de bijzondere stukken vinden we o.a. een 16e-eeuws wandtapijt, een collectie oude drukpersen en drukkersmateriaal, en een oude stoombrandspuit. De collectie werd ook aangevuld met werken op of met papier en grafiek.

Na een grondige restauratie van het Onze-Lieve-Vrouwhospitaalcomplex in 1959-1965 wordt het volledige pand gebruikt als Stedelijk Museum. Het gebouw werd pas in 1991 als cultureel erfgoed beschermd
