L'hôtel de ville d'Alost est un édifice de style néo-classique situé sur la Grand-Place (Grote Markt en néerlandais) de la ville belge d'Alost (Aalst) dans la province de Flandre-Orientale.

Histoire

L'édifice est initialement une maison de maître construite en style classique en 1643-1645 par l'architecte anversois H. De Doncker. Il est adapté et en partie reconstruit en style rococo au XVIIIe siècle. De ces deux premières phases subsiste la cour intérieure.

La façade principale, qui donne sur la Grand-Place d'Alost (Grote Markt), est érigée en 1828-1830 en style néo-classique par l'architecte Louis Roelandt.

L'édifice est classé monument historique depuis le 19 juin 1991

Architecture

Façade néo-classique
L'édifice présente vers la Grand-Place et vers la rue du Moulin (Molenstraat) une large façade de style néo-classique comptant trois niveaux et sept travées.

Cette façade, enduite et peinte en blanc, présente une composition symétrique comprenant un avant-corps de trois travées flanqué de deux travées à gauche et de deux travées à droite.

L'avant-corps est orné, au rez-de-chaussée, de bossages plats à refends et, à l'étage, de quatre hautes colonnes monolithes dont les chapiteaux corinthiens soutiennent un puissant entablement lisse. Toute la largeur de l'étage de l'avant-corps est occupée par un balcon à balustrade sur lequel s'ouvrent trois hautes portes-fenêtres

Cet avant-corps est percé dans l'axe d'un portail rectangulaire surmonté d'une fenêtre encadrée de colonnettes dont les chapiteaux portent un fronton triangulaire surmonté d'un grand arc en plein cintre au tympan duquel sont figurés le blason d'Alost et des rinceaux intégrant le millésime 1830 et des têtes de lion. Les écoinçons sont richement sculptés.

La partie néo-classique de l'hôtel de ville abrite la salle des fêtes, qui a été rénovée en 2011

Complexe arrière
Derrière cette façade néo-classique, l'hôtel de ville forme un complexe fermé avec des bâtiments regroupés autour d'une cour pavée rectangulaire.

Les ailes latérales de ce complexe sont des constructions traditionnelles en briques et en grès construites en 1643-1645.

L'aile principale, qui ferme la cour au nord a été reconstruite en 1756 dans le style rococo.

Cette aile, enduite et peinte en blanc, présente vers la cour une façade de cinq travées. La travée centrale, luxueusement décorée, est délimitées par deux hauts pilastres à bossage. Le rez-de-chaussée est percé d'une porte de style Louis XV surmontée d'une fenêtre d'imposte en fer forgé finement ouvragé. L'étage est agrémenté d'une porte-terrasse surmontée d'une imposte assez semblable mais au profil cintré, précédée d'un balcon en fer forgé noir et or. Cette travée axiale se termine par un pignon richement orné dont l'oculus et les sculptures s'inscrivent sous des arcs recti-curvilignes qui portent un cartouche orné d'un cadran solaire

Aalst Town Hall is a neoclassical style building located on the Grand-Place (Grote Markt in Dutch) of the Belgian city of Aalst (Aalst) in the province of East Flanders.

History

The building is initially a mansion built in classical style in 1643-1645 by the Antwerp architect H. De Doncker. It was adapted and partly rebuilt in Rococo style in the 18th century. From these first two phases remains the inner courtyard.

The main facade, which overlooks the Grand-Place in Aalst (Grote Markt), was built in 1828-1830 in neoclassical style by the architect Louis Roelandt.

The building has been classified as a historical monument since June 19, 1991

Architeture

Neoclassical facade
The building presents towards the Grand-Place and towards the rue du Moulin (Molenstraat) a large neo-classical style facade with three levels and seven bays.

This facade, coated and painted in white, presents a symmetrical composition comprising a three-bay front section flanked by two bays on the left and two bays on the right.

The avant-corps is adorned, on the ground floor, with flat bosses with splits and, on the first floor, with four tall monolithic columns whose Corinthian capitals support a powerful smooth entablature. The entire width of the first floor is occupied by a balustraded balcony onto which three high patio doors open.

This avant-corps is pierced in the axis of a rectangular portal surmounted by a window framed by small columns, the capitals of which bear a triangular pediment surmounted by a large semicircular arch on the tympanum of which are represented the coat of arms of Aalst and foliage incorporating the 1830 vintage and lion heads. The spandrels are richly carved.

The neoclassical part of the town hall houses the village hall, which was renovated in 2011

Rear complex
Behind this neo-classical facade, the town hall forms a closed complex with buildings grouped around a rectangular paved courtyard.

The side wings of this complex are traditional brick and sandstone constructions built in 1643-1645.

The main wing, which closes the courtyard to the north, was rebuilt in 1756 in the Rococo style.

This wing, coated and painted white, presents a facade of five bays towards the courtyard. The luxuriously decorated central bay is delimited by two high bossed pilasters. The ground floor has a Louis XV style door surmounted by a finely crafted wrought iron transom window. The first floor has a patio door surmounted by a transom rather similar but with an arched profile, preceded by a black and gold wrought iron balcony. This axial bay ends with a richly decorated gable whose oculus and sculptures are inscribed under recti-curvilinear arches which bear a cartouche adorned with a sundial.

Historiek

Het gebouw is aanvankelijk een herenhuis gebouwd in klassieke stijl in 1643-1645 door de Antwerpse architect H. De Doncker. In de 18e eeuw werd het aangepast en deels herbouwd in rococostijl. Van deze eerste twee fasen blijft de binnenplaats over.

De voorgevel, die uitkijkt op de Grote Markt van Aalst (Grote Markt), werd in 1828-1830 in neoklassieke stijl gebouwd door architect Louis Roelandt.

Het gebouw is sinds 19 juni 1991 geklasseerd als historisch monument

Neoklassieke gevel
Het gebouw presenteert naar de Grote Markt en naar de rue du Moulin (Molenstraat) een grote gevel in neoklassieke stijl met drie niveaus en zeven traveeën.

Deze gevel, gecoat en wit geschilderd, vertoont een symmetrische compositie bestaande uit een voorste gedeelte met drie traveeën, geflankeerd door twee traveeën aan de linkerkant en twee traveeën aan de rechterkant.

Het avant-corps is op de begane grond versierd met platte nokken met spleten en op de eerste verdieping met vier hoge monolithische zuilen waarvan de Korinthische kapitelen een krachtig glad hoofdgestel ondersteunen. De gehele breedte van de eerste verdieping wordt ingenomen door een balustrade balkon waarop drie hoge openslaande deuren uitkomen.

Dit avant-corps wordt doorboord in de as van een rechthoekig portaal met daarboven een raam omlijst door kleine zuilen, waarvan de kapitelen een driehoekig fronton dragen met daarboven een grote halfronde boog op het timpaan waarvan het wapen van Aalst en gebladerte met de vintage 1830 en leeuwenkoppen. De borstweringen zijn rijkelijk uitgesneden.

Het neoklassieke deel van het stadhuis herbergt het dorpshuis, dat in 2011 werd gerenoveerd

Achter complex
Achter deze neoklassieke gevel vormt het stadhuis een gesloten complex met gebouwen gegroepeerd rond een rechthoekig geplaveid binnenhof.

De zijvleugels van dit complex zijn traditionele bakstenen en zandstenen constructies uit 1643-1645.

De hoofdvleugel, die de binnenplaats naar het noorden afsluit, werd in 1756 herbouwd in rococostijl.

Deze vleugel, gecoat en wit geschilderd, presenteert een gevel van vijf traveeën naar de binnenplaats. De luxueus ingerichte centrale travee wordt begrensd door twee hoge pilasters. De begane grond heeft een deur in Lodewijk XV-stijl met daarboven een fijn bewerkt smeedijzeren bovenraam. De eerste verdieping heeft een patiodeur met daarboven een spiegel die er ongeveer hetzelfde uitziet, maar met een gebogen profiel, voorafgegaan door een zwart en goud smeedijzer balkon. Deze axiale travee eindigt met een rijk versierde gevel waarvan de oculus en sculpturen zijn ingeschreven onder rechtlijnige bogen die een cartouche dragen versierd met een zonnewijzer.
