The Punta Gorda Charlotte Library is part of the Charlotte County library system and is located in downtown Punta Gorda. It was completed in 2019 and is the sixth location for this library. This new library is the result of years of work by the Friends of the Punta Gorda Library, now calling themselves the Friends of the Punta Gorda Charlotte Library.
Located at 401 Shreve Street, Punta Gorda, FL. This 20,000 square foot building was a cooperative effort between City of Punta Gorda, the Charlotte County Library System and the Friends of Punta Gorda Library.
The City of Punta Gorda donated 6.2 acres of land on which the new library is built. According to Charlotte County, the cost to build was:
$7,801,000 from the voter-approved 1% sales tax
$275,000 + from the City of Punta Gorda
$202,000+ donated by the Friends of the Punta Gorda Library.
The library consists of the main section with separate children's and teen area. Ample tables for two or more individuals, upholstered seating with tables, group study rooms, and a archive section for research.
There is a Friends of the Punta Gorda Charlotte Library bookstore, thoroughly modern restrooms that are ADA compliant and public meeting rooms that can be rented by the community. A covered area is also available at the parking lot entrance for pickup and drop off of passengers and a drive through book drop-off return adjacent to the parking lot.
