This headstone is for Mary Grace Palermo, who is buried at Saint Gregory Cemetery in North East, Pennsylvania. The headstone only gives the years Ms. Palermo lived, without the months or days. It states that she lived from 1856 to 1959. I could not find any additional information about her via an internet search, and so am unsure whether she was 102 years old or 103 years old when she died. On the headstone are the names of what I believe to be three churches that Mary may have been a member of, Congrega San Guiseppe, Maria SS DiLoreto, and Maria SS Immacolata. Mary is buried next to another grave with the last name Palermo on the headstone, Francisco Palermo (1851-1929), although there is no indication as to his relationship to Mary. May she rest in peace.

In 1856, the year Mary was born, Franklin Pierce was president of the United States (although he would be defeated by James Buchanan in the election in November of that year), Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom, and Pius IX was pope. Other well-known Americans who were born in 1856 include Booker T. Washington, Woodrow Wilson, and L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz. Throughout Mary's life many important national and world events occurred, including the American Civil War, the end of slavery in the United States, the rise of Communism, the Great Depression, and the World Wars. In the year Mary died, Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the United States and Alaska and Hawaii became states. It's interesting to think about how much the world changed during her long lifetime.
